Standard “90° Band / CFS Backshell” for Square Flange and Jam Nut receptacles. Backshells are available in different style and plating options.

The primary reason to use backshells on MIL-DTL-38999 connectors is to provide additional protection and support for the cable termination. Here are several key reasons for using back shells:

1.  Strain Relief: Back shells offer strain relief to the cable by providing a secure anchor point where the cable exits the connector. This helps prevent the cable from being pulled or stressed at the termination point, which could otherwise lead to damage or failure of the connection.

2. Environmental Protection: Backshells can enhance the environmental sealing of the connector assembly. They can provide added protection against moisture, dust, and other contaminants that could potentially compromise the integrity of the connection in harsh environments.

3. Cable Management: Backshells often include features such as cable clamps or cable tie points that assist in organizing and securing the cable bundle. This helps to manage the cable assembly more effectively and reduces the risk of cable damage due to movement or vibration.

4. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding: Some backshells are designed with EMI shielding properties to protect the electrical signals transmitted through the connector from interference or electromagnetic noise. This shielding is especially important in applications where signal integrity is critical.

5. Improved Durability: The use of backshells generally enhances the overall durability and reliability of the connector assembly. By reducing stress on the cable and providing additional support and protection, back shells contribute to a longer lifespan and more robust performance of the connector system.

In summary, backshells are integral components of MIL-DTL-38999 connectors, offering various functional benefits that contribute to the overall performance, reliability, and longevity of these connectors in demanding military and aerospace applications.
